The Best Person in the World

So Donald Trump is president-elect.  This is as good a time as any to ask a question that has been bugging me for a long time.  Who has done more good for humanity than anyone else?  I don’t think it’s Trump.  Quite the opposite.  So who is?

There’s a man named Norman Borlaug.  He developed a strain of wheat that is crediting with saving a billion lives.  That’s pretty good.  But who knows, maybe the next Hitler is in that crowd.  Maybe those billion people have miserable lives and wish they’d never been born.  Probably not, but it has to be a wide variety of people, not all of them are going to be great.  A great man, to be sure, but I’m not sure he’s done the most good.

George Washington?  Sure.  He helped found the US.  For the most part our history has been pretty great.  Not perfect, but pretty awesome.  We made it to the moon. We produced Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.  Another great man.  But I’m not going to rehash America’s history, let’s just leave it at it’s not perfect.

My vote is for J.K. Rowling.  From what I understand kids who read Harry Potter are more empathetic and understanding.  An entire generation of kids grew up with those books and movies.  Look at the map of youth voters.  Clinton would have won in a landslide.  With a bit of luck those people will continue to empathize and understand in the future.
